• Overview

    The Diploma in Teaching English as a Second Language provides professional qualification for those who seek to teach English, particularly in primary schools. It is designed to provide students with a strong fundamental knowledge of the English language and the teaching of English as a second language. Students are trained to possess a strong command of the English language and the competency to teach English confidently as well as the skills to create a conducive teaching and learning environment for learners. Graduates of this programme will have an understanding of the history, philosophy, systems, practices and challenges of educational development particularly in the teaching of English as a second language. The importance of the programme is emphasized by comprehensive course syllabi, ranging from linguistic content to the pedagogical aspects of it. The programme is also committed to equip students with professional attitudes, good ethics and leadership qualities and provide students with an educational experience that motivates them to pursue life-long learning.

  • Outcomes

    At the end of the programme, students will be able to:

    1.    Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and in-depth understanding in the use of English language and the teaching and learning of ESL.
    2.    Design, implement and evaluate the teaching-learning process in the ESL classroom.
    3.    Apply effective guidance and suitable interaction strategies to foster character building and support social responsibility.
    4.    Practise professionalism and high ethical values in teaching-learning process in the ESL classroom.
    5.    Demonstrate competency in communication, portray leadership qualities and employ team dynamics.
    6.    Apply higher order thinking skills in educational settings.
    7.    Apply ICT skills in the English Language teaching and learning and pursue life-long learning to meet global challenges.
    8.    Exhibit managerial and entrepreneurial skills related to current issues and trends for social and community service.

  • Program Description

    This programme requires students to take Education Foundation courses which provide them with a fundamental knowledge of the field of education in general and the education system in Malaysia. In addition, students are required to take the English language courses that will enhance their command of the English language in both speaking and writing. In order to equip students with the teaching skills, students are required to take the teaching courses in all the four language skills and the classroom pedagogical courses in relation to the teaching of English as a second language. At the end of the programme, students are required to undergo a teaching practicum in primary schools that will provide them with the real life teaching experience in the contexts of primary education.

  • Entry Requirement

    i.    Passed SPM with at least 3 credits including a minimum of C6 in English or other equivalent qualifications

    ii.    Certificates in related field with a standard minimum/Accredited (CGPA 2.00 and above)

  • Career Prospect

    First and foremost, the Diploma in TESL will qualify students to pursue studies at a higher level in related fields such as TESL or English or any discipline of interest.

    Job prospects: educator at the primary level of education institutions such as kindergarten and primary schools; editor; interpreter/translator; journalist/ broadcaster in any media corporation; customer service representative etc.
